HIMSS15 Presentation & Paper: The Impact of Healthcare System Replacement on Legacy Data Retention

Posted on | April 15, 2015

On April 14, 2015, Scott Kidder, Director of Business Development for Harmony Healthcare IT, delivered session content at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference & Exhibition entitled System Replacement Impact on Legacy Data Retention. The session covered how clinical, financial or even human resource system replacement at a healthcare organization directly impacts patient or employee data retention.

In the presentation, Scott analyzed four common strategies for managing legacy data. He considered cost, risk and level-of-effort for each. One of the strategies, electronic archiving, was delved into more deeply as a simple way to comply with medical record retention requirements while reducing exposures.

The paper summarizes HIMSS session content and provides a broad overview of the general issues that the data extraction and migration analysts at Harmony Healthcare IT encounter in daily work. Those issues span hundreds of healthcare providers in both acute and ambulatory care settings over the last several years. The paper  serves as a roadmap for healthcare providers engaged in determining and implementing best practices for managing legacy health data.
